On the trail of the Bishop-Princes
As an alternative to the national ViaJura itinerary, ViaJura Regio covers the territories of the bishop-princes of Basel, leading from Basel to Delémont via the Alsatian Sundgau, Ajouie and Clos-du-Doubs.
Throughout the journey, travellers will be delighted to discover towns that have maintained their ancestral centres such as Ferrette, Porrentruy and St-Ursanne. They will taste local products – fried carp, Ajoie sausage, trout or cheeses – and get to know a very lively craftwork tradition. This historic route takes visitors through a verdant setting, spanning the Franco-Swiss border and offering a number of places of interest.
As demonstrated by one of the itineraries set out on a fourth century roman map, the region has been crossed by travellers for centuries. In the high Middle Ages, when this land was part of the Kingdom of Burgundy, the Columban monks of Luxeuil moved to Moutier in the Grandval. Their territory was given in 999 to the Bishop of Basel, who became the lord, and southern Alsace (the Sundgau with Ferrette) was annexed to it. After domination by the Habsburgs, the territory became French in 1648. The Bishop-Prince of Basel reigned over this territory until 1792. In the nineteenth century, then during the two World Wars, links between the Jura and Alsace were cut off. The ViaJura Regio has helped to re-establish them.
